Subaru Forester vs. Chevrolet Equinox

All-Weather Capability

One of the biggest Subaru Forester advantages is its standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. Unlike the Chevrolet Equinox, which comes standard with front-wheel drive and offers all-wheel drive as an available upgrade, every Forester is equipped to provide confident traction in changing road and weather conditions. Most Forester trims also include Subaru X-MODE®, helping optimize traction on slippery pavement, gravel roads, and other low-grip surfaces.

Wilderness Performance

While the Chevrolet Equinox ACTIV adds rugged styling cues and all-terrain tires, drivers looking for more serious off-road capability will appreciate what the Forester Wilderness brings to the table. It enhances the Forester with increased ground clearance (9.3 inches), specialized suspension tuning, protective skid plates, all-terrain tires, and dual-function X-MODE® for added confidence on challenging terrain.

Interior Space and Cargo Capacity

Passenger comfort is another area where the Forester shines. Compared with the Chevrolet Equinox, it offers more front headroom and legroom, creating a more accommodating environment for taller drivers and front-seat passengers. While rear-seat dimensions are similar, the Forester provides extra shoulder and hip room to help everyone stay comfortable.

Cargo flexibility is equally impressive. The Forester offers up to 69.1 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity in most trims, while base models without the panoramic roof have even more available storage (up to 74.4 cubic feet). The Chevrolet Equinox provides up to 63.5 cubic feet, giving the Forester a meaningful advantage when transporting luggage, outdoor gear, or sports equipment around Barnstable or New Bedford.

Subaru Forester vs. Mazda CX-50

Everyday Versatility

The Mazda CX-50 emphasizes athletic styling, but the Subaru Forester focuses on everyday functionality. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, generous ground clearance, and available X-MODE® make it particularly well-suited for drivers who frequently encounter changing New England weather, gravel roads, or trailhead parking areas around Falmouth.

Wilderness Advantage

The Mazda CX-50's Meridian Edition trim sports a more adventurous appearance along with all-terrain tires, but the Forester Wilderness is engineered to deliver real capability. In addition to unique styling and all-terrain tires, the Forester Wilderness adds upgraded suspension components, increased ground clearance, skid plates, and a dual-function X-MODE® system.

Passenger Comfort and Cargo Room

The upright design of the Subaru Forester contributes to a roomier cabin, especially for front-seat occupants. It provides more front headroom and legroom than the Mazda CX-50, as well as extra shoulder and hip room. Additionally, the Forester offers a maximum cargo capacity of 69.1 to 74.4 cubic feet, a significant advantage over the Mazda CX-50's maximum capacity of 56.3 cubic feet.

Technology and Visibility

The Subaru Forester's large windows and upright design contribute to a more open cabin feel and improved outward visibility. It also uses a straightforward touchscreen infotainment system, while the CX-50 relies on a less intuitive rotary controller.

2026 Subaru Forester FAQ

The standard 2.5-liter BOXER® engine produces 182 horsepower, while the Forester Hybrid variant generates 194 horsepower.

The gas-powered Subaru Forester delivers up to an EPA-estimated 29 mpg combined (26 city/33 highway), a strong figure for an all-wheel-drive SUV. Hybrid models increase efficiency even further, achieving up to an EPA-estimated 35 combined MPG (35 city/34 highway).

With standard AWD, high ground clearance, and Subaru X-MODE® traction management in all but the base trim, the Forester is well-suited for drivers who regularly encounter snow, rain, and slippery roads.

Most models have 27 cubic feet behind the second row and up to 69.1 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. Base models without the panoramic moonroof have even more available cargo capacity.
