Subaru Crosstrek vs. Toyota & Honda

2023 Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR: Compare Subcompact Crossovers in Bourne, MA

The Subaru Crosstrek makes a strong case for being the most well-rounded option in the subcompact crossover class. It offers comfortable accommodations, flexible cargo capacity, and confident capability for every season. It's impressively spacious while retaining a conveniently sized physical footprint. And with multiple powertrain options and nicely equipped trim levels, there's a Crosstrek for almost every need and lifestyle.

The subcompact crossover segment is among the most competitive in the industry. But the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek offers a complete package that's tough to beat. Here's a look at how it measures up in a few key areas to two prominent class competitors, the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Honda HR-V

  • The Subaru Crosstrek and Honda HR-V offer similar standard 2.0-liter engines. However, if you want more passing power at your disposal, you'll find it in the Crosstrek's Sport and Limited trims, which boost output from 152 to 182 horsepower. The Honda HR-V doesn't have a second engine option.

  • The Crosstrek offers surefooted confidence on and off the road thanks to standard Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. And if you choose the automatic transmission, you'll get Subaru's X-MODE traction management system for enhanced off-road capability. The Honda HR-V has 7.0 inches of ground clearance. And while it offers available AWD, you'll have to pay extra, and it's not suitable for venturing away from the asphalt like the Subaru Crosstrek.

  • Taller drivers will appreciate the accommodations of the Crosstrek, which offers an extra 1.2 inches of front legroom compared to the HR-V. Rear passengers will enjoy more personal space, with nearly 8 inches more hip room than the Honda HR-V.

Subaru Crosstrek vs. Toyota CH-R

  • The Subaru Crosstrek's base engine is a bit more powerful than the Toyota C-HR's standard mill (152 vs. 144 horsepower). However, the Crosstrek also equips a stronger 182-horsepower engine in its Sport and Limited trim levels. The C-HR doesn't have another engine option. And while the Crosstrek comes standard with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system, the C-HR is only available in front-wheel drive.

  • The Subaru Crosstrek offers a roomy cabin with ample passenger space and 21 cubic feet to spare for cargo. When you need more storage, you can fold the rear seats to access 55.3 cubic feet. The Toyota C-HR has 19.1 cubic feet behind the second row and only 37 cubes with the rear seats folded. Have something to transport that won't fit inside the cabin? The Crosstrek comes standard with raised roof rails, something the C-HR doesn't offer.

  • Both the Crosstrek and C-HR have a suite of standard driver-assistance technologies, including collision mitigation, lane-keeping, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Crosstrek goes the extra mile with available driver aids like Reverse Automatic Braking and steering-adaptive headlights. The C-HR doesn't have these technologies.
