  • Before landing in Plymouth, MA, the Pilgrims spent five weeks in Provincetown.
  • Luther Child Crowell created America's lunchtime staple, the paper bag, in Dennis, MA in 1867.
  • One of America's most famous families, the Kennedys, spent their summers in scenic Hyannis Port in an area now commonly called the "Kennedy Compound".
  • Orleans, MA was the only town in Cape Cod fired upon by an enemy craft. The first attack on Orleans was by the British during the War of 1812. During World War I, German forces fired on the town on July 21, 1918.
  • Provincetown's Pilgrim Monument is the tallest granite structure in America, standing proudly at 252 feet.
  • Visitors of the Cape's beautiful beaches may encounter other notable summer residents: The grey seal and the humpback whale.
  • In the early part of the century, Harwich had a speed limit of 8 MPH. On the island of Nantucket, the speed limit was only 4 MPH (thank goodness the radar gun wasn't invented until 1954)!
  • Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is regularly named one of Conde Nast Traveler's Top Ten Beaches in the United States. Coast Guard Beach, along with the beaches of Martha's Vineyard, are the only two New England beaches to receive this honor.
  • Old Kings Highway, at 39 miles long, is the longest contiguous historic district in America and contains four centuries of architecture.
  • In 1602, Mariner Bartholomew Gosnold named the area Cape Cod after the abundance of codfish caught in the waters offshore.
  • Cape Cod is one of the most popular retirement spots in the United States. Nearly 25% of the population is retired on the Cape.
  • The Cape Playhouse in Dennis is America's oldest professional theater.
  •  Originally, Cape Cod was united with the mainland, until the US Army Corps of Engineers dug the 17 1/2 mile long, 480-foot wide Cape Cod Canal from 1909 to 1914. Today, this is the world's widest sea-level canal.
  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Woods Hole, established in 1930, is the largest independent oceanographic laboratory in the world.
  • If you're like us and love cars, visit the J.K. Lilly III Automobile Museum at the Heritage Museum and Gardens of Sandwich, MA for their impressive collection of the finest antique American automobiles in the country.
  • The cranberry is Massachusetts' leading agricultural product. In 1816, Captain Henry Hall first cultivated cranberries in Dennis, MA. In 1864 the first commercial cranberry bogs in the nation were established in Harwich, MA.
  • The Mayflower Compact, created and ratified in Cape Cod Bay during the Pilgrims' five-week stay in Provincetown, was the first written framework of government established in the United States.
