Subaru's Eyesight technology has taken off in Japan, where streets and parking spaces are markedly narrower than here in the US. A feature normally reserved for high-end, expensive luxury brands, Subaru's Eyesight technology incorporates stereo cameras mounted in the cabin to alert the car's computer system to slow or stop when a vehicle ahead is getting too close. Additionally, if the system senses the vehicle swerving outside the lane, it sounds an alarm that alerts the driver. This system is incorporated in part because Subaru strategists knew the larger Legacy sedan would be an otherwise difficult sell, as it was larger and wider than most other Japanese models.

Utilizing cameras does have some limitations, particularly when the cameras' line of sight is disrupted. However, the benefits are many. Several near collisions have already been avoided thanks to the system in Japan, and it adds a lot of value and peace of mind to the consumer, without adding a lot to the purchase price.

This system has been a big hit, and more and more Japanese consumers are opting into the system, and into Subaru.
