Subaru released the new WRX concept at the 2013 New York International Auto Show, a staging ground for the world's most exceptional and highly anticipated vehicles. For Subaru it was a chance to show off what's likely to become the next generation of an iconic Subaru model.

"It's a glimpse into the future of a new WRX that is at once powerful and elegantly styled," said Thomas J. Doll, chief operating officer of Subaru of America.

The WRX concept boasts a turbo-charged engine, AWD grip and lower body than the current WRX. The result is a sleek and aggressive design for a current WRX already that's very fluent in off-road and street performance.

The elegant body is the clearest distinction between the current WRX and the WRX concept - not that the old WRX couldn't turn heads - but the concept is stunning in the mountain backcountry or in a luxury valet lot. Another impressive touch, which may or may not make production, is the all carbon-fiber roof, which creates a low center of gravity and reduces the over-all weight.

The entire vehicle is wider by about four inches, and the body reflects forward motion through Subaru's "hexagonal design motif". That design is also found in the front grille and beautifully shaped intakes designed to enhance aerodynamics, add down-force and aid engine cooling.

This debut was more about showing the world what the future of the WRX might look like, but for this concept, not all the bells and whistles will make it to production - namely the quad exhaust tips, lights, and miniature rearview mirrors. Regardless, with a new Impreza design in 2012, Subaru enthusiasts have been waiting for a fresh look for the WRX. While that wait might not be completely over, Subaru's concept is headed in an exciting direction.
