SAIL MARTHA'S VINEYARD
Connecting Island youth to the sea and building skills to last a lifetime
Our mission is "To promote, study, research, educate and fund projects, enterprises and undertakings designed or otherwise construed to reaffirm the Island character and maritime heritage of Martha's Vineyard through programs and activities in the regional school system and the broader community that refocuses attention to the waterfront of today and in history, and to foster educational programs for the training of the community in the sciences of seamanship and navigation?"
For nineteen years Sail Martha's Vineyard has established and continues to develop public access to maritime education and the sea at little or no cost to its constituencies. Our programs are primarily for Island children but programs for Island adults and seasonal residents are also available.
Sail Martha's Vineyard is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit that has no endowment. We raise every dollar we spend every year. We are an active and committed grassroots organization that relies on the support of 449 members, 6 foundations, 107 businesses and the generosity of over 350 annual donors. Participation in our programs has increased by over 100% in the last four years, but in spite of our broad based support, their generosity has not kept pace with the costs associated with the growth of our programs.
The Vineyard Cup was established in 2006 to address this reality and to raise money in support of Sail Martha's Vineyard's programs. We sought to establish a sustainable, high quality and nationally visible regatta that would attract recreational and professional sailors. With ninety-seven boats participating in 2011 and with strong sponsor support from twenty-four national, regional and local brands, the Vineyard Cup has positioned itself as one of the premier events on the New England summer racing circuit.
