From DRIVE Magazine:
Subaru gives Legacy and Outback which account
for more than half the new Subaru models sold in the U.S. market a
face-lift, upgraded electronics, a more efficient powertrain, and
innovative driver assist and safety features for 2013. Although exterior
design cues indicate the new model year, most of the changes are inside
the cabin and under the sheet metal.
Innovative Technologies
Seeing Double
Debuting as an option for the 2013 Legacy and Outback 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited models, the Subaru EyeSight1 driver assist system breaks new ground. It provides another set of eyes to improve comfort, help to reduce driving fatigue, and enhance safety.
How does it work? Stereo cameras mounted on either side of the interior rear view mirror continuously scan the road ahead. The system processes images from the two cameras to identify vehicles, obstacles, traffic lanes, and other things ahead of the car. The EyeSight system uses that information for a variety of functions, including:
Limited models sport a new instrument cluster. The center-mounted color LCD shows settings for the new technology.

AM/FM Stereo HD Radio with Single-Disc CD Player and Navigation System Features
|
|
Play it, Stream it, Say it, Port it
For 2013, you can do more with the audio system. Upgrades to the standard system include the addition of Bluetooth®2 Audio Streaming and Hands-Free Phone Connectivity, iPod®3 Control Capability, and a USB port.
An AM/FM Stereo HD Radio™4 with Single-Disc CD Player and Navigation System is optional on all Limited models. (See a list of its phenomenal features in the sidebar.) In particular, note that the navigation system's maps are stored in an SD card which can be updated easily by computer. Later this year, this system will have smartphone integration by Aha, which safely links it to Internet content.
Better Go
Over the last 20 years, Subaru has continually evolved its engine technology. However, meeting customer expectations for cleaner engines with responsive power called for a basic engine redesign. Legacy and Outback have a new 2.5-liter dual-overhead-camshaft four-cylinder; it's the same one that debuted in the 2011 Subaru Forester.
Better Flow
In addition, the automatic transmission - a Subaru Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) - for the 2.5i models was revised to complement the changes made in the engine. Subaru reduced the weight of the Lineartronic CVT and therefore the entire vehicle, which ultimately helps owners save money at the fuel pumps.
Smarter Stops
New to both Legacy and Outback is the Brake Override System. This safety system helps to prevent unintentional vehicle acceleration when the brake and the accelerator pedal are both applied by the driver while the vehicle is moving.
Dressing Up
With all that, the restyling of the two vehicles
is the icing for a technologically beautiful cake. Up front, Legacy and
Outback have a revised grille, bumper, headlight assemblies, and fog
lights that give them fresh faces. In addition, Premium and Limited
models have newly designed, sporty, 17-inch wheels.
Stepping Out in Outback
For an Adjustment
Owners asked for it, and Subaru responded. The 2013 Outback now has rear cross bars with an adjustable spread of 9.8 inches to better handle canoes and kayaks of varying sizes.
Something Completely Different
Available on all 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited Outback models, the Special Appearance Package sets apart the optioned vehicle with unique features. Outside, it has Machine Finish Gray alloy wheels and gray grille, door handles, and mirrors (with integrated turn signals). Headlights have a black inner bezel, and the rear bumper cover is black. These touches will turn heads!
Inside, package features include a drawing-room-like Saddle Brown Leather interior, a 10-way power driver's seat with two-position memory, and woodgrain patterned matte finish accent trim. Subaru also debuts another innovation with this package - the convenience of Keyless Access & Start.
The Keyless Access & Start system unlocks, locks, and starts the vehicle without using a key. The system's remote transmitter makes it easy to lock and unlock the driver's door and rear gate via touch sensors. The engine starts and stops by a button instead of a key.
Dramatic Developments
With every model year, Subaru improves its Outback and Legacy models. Behind the quiet restyling for 2013, new features significantly raise the bar for driving dynamics, safety, comfort, and convenience.
1 EyeSight is a driver assist system which may
not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always
responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness
depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance and weather and road
conditions. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation
and limitations.
